Yellow Gas PTFE tape is a specific type of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape used for sealing gas pipe threads, such as natural gas, butane, and propane lines. While it shares the same basic function as other PTFE tapes—to provide a leak-proof seal—the yellow color indicates it is a heavier-duty, gas-approved product designed for the specific demands of gas installations, differentiating it from standard white PTFE tape used for water lines.

Key characteristics of yellow PTFE tape
Gas-specific applications: It is manufactured to be used on gas fittings to prevent leaks.
Indicator of density: The yellow color often signifies a "double density" or a heavier, thicker tape compared to standard white tapes, making it suitable for wider pipe threads.
Compatibility: It is formulated to be safe for use with gas, unlike some white tapes that may contain petroleum-based additives which can be a fire hazard in oxygen or gas applications.
Function: It acts as a deformable filler and lubricant, helping to seal threaded joints without hardening and making it easier to tighten and later remove connections.
How it compares to other PTFE tapes
White PTFE tape: Typically a single-density tape designed for general plumbing applications on water lines.
Other colors: Other colored PTFE tapes, such as red or pink, may be available for even larger pipes or special applications, with color indicating density and intended use.
Importance of color: While color is a good visual guide, it's crucial to always check the product's specific rating to ensure it's approved for the intended use, especially for gas or high-pressure systems.
How to use yellow PTFE tape
Clean the threads: Make sure the pipe threads are clean and dry.
Apply the tape: Wind the tape clockwise around the male threads of the pipe fitting.
Overlap slightly: Overlap the tape by about half its width, and apply 2-3 wraps, depending on the pipe and fitting.
Tuck the end: Finish by tucking the end of the tape under the last layer so it doesn't snag.
